Etosha National Park. White Ghost. The “White Ghost” was grazing in the bushes next to the road; I could photograph the animal from up close. I was amazed at the sounds and movement around the bushes as I sat and photographed this giant from the rear back window. Photo Lizane Louw

“Africa Untamed”

I spent five months back home in Africa in 2019. We did an extensive 14000 km road trip and safari, crossing South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and southern Zimbabwe.

The experiences in the bush, the villages, the national parks and safari lodges made me think about how to use my voice to support nature conservation, eco-tourism and regenerative travel.

I aim to continue working in nature photography and with NGOs and conservation organisations in the coming years.

I dream of returning to Africa to visit Kenya, Malawi and Tanzania; I hope to make the trip home in 2023.

Etosha National Park, Namibia. Going nowhere slowly. A family of giraffes walking through acacia in Etosha. Like human fingerprints, no two of these giant mammals have the same pattern. Each giraffe is unique in the way they look. Photo Lizane Louw

Etosha National Park. Springbok and Oryx Encounters. A special moment at a watering hole in Etosha. The springbok is the national animal of South Africa. This medium-sized antelope got its name from how it moves, jumping and hopping. In Afrikaans “spring” means to leap, and “bok” means antelope. The larger antelope, the Gemsbok (Oryx gazella), is the largest of the oryx species. This large desert animal with its long horns and distinct colouration is the national animal of Namibia. Etosha National Park, Namibia. First Encounter. On our 15000 km road trip exploring Southern Africa, we encountered some awe-inspiring African landscapes and wildlife. This was my first encounter with a black rhino. Photo Lizane Louw

Etosha National Park. One of my favourite animals, Zebra. I am fascinated with the stripes and textures of the animal's hide and hair. These stripes and patterns are like fingerprints of humans; they are unique to each animal. A lot of research has been done on the function of these stripes. The most important research points to camouflage and protection, not only from other animals but also flies. Photo Lizane Louw.

Etosha National Park. Black Rhino.Gentle Giant. The black rhino is still considered critically endangered, with 5600 found in Namibia and Coastal East Africa. Wildlife crimes, the poaching of these animals and black-market trafficking of rhino horn continue to threaten these animals. My dream is to head back to Africa in the next year and help fight for the survival of these solitary gentle giants on the verge of extinction. Photo Lizane Louw

Etosha National Park. Lunch Time, munch time. Giraffes are herbivores. In this close up photo this giraffe, the tallest animal on our tiny blue planet, eats leaves from Acacia trees. A favourite for these tall animals. They use their long tongue to cut the leaves from the branches. Photo Lizane Louw

Chobe National Park. Bison, Bison! Water buffalo having a "friendly" encounter. This photo was taken just outside Kasane on a boat cruise with guides of Chobe Safari Lodge. Kasane Botswana is close to where the borders of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Zambia meet. Frequent sightings of hippo, water birds, buffalo, crocodiles, and puku are also viewed from the boats that cross the river. Photo Lizane

Etosha National Park, Namibia. Leading lines. Sometimes art and nature create a dance in the wild. You have to look closely and see all lines come together. Time stops. That moment… Photo Lizane Louw

Chobe National Park. River crossing. An elephant crossing from one river bank to the other in the Chobe River, Botswana. This photo was taken just outside Kasane on a boat cruise with guides of Chobe Safari Lodge. Kasane Botswana is close to where the borders of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Zambia meet. In the Chobe National Park, there are about 80 000 elephants. Frequent sightings of hippo, water birds, buffalo, crocodiles, and puku are also viewed from the boats that cross the river.
